This is a very good essay and it actually addresses one of the big goals for our organization.

We’re not just trying to guide autistic kids, but their parents & clinicians as well.

We know what we needed as kids, what helped us, and what didn’t. That will be very useful information for both parents & clinicians.

Follow the money! It is $200,000 to $300,000 for the surgery and $1,200,000 for the non-FDA approved dangerous drugs patients must take for the rest of their life. Surgeons and pharma are making $billions by maiming our children for life and all belong in jail!

Another fantastic piece Maia. It addresses something I have been pondering: the unique, existential confrontation an undiagnosed or late diagnosed autistic/adhd mother experiences when her autistic/adhd daughter expresses her distress as a Trans identity. There is so much to unpack when a woman who never had the vocabulary to articulate her own profoundly confusing experiences, and never had the tools to overcome many of them-is confronted by the same experiences being articulated (perhaps for the first time) but wrongly attributed. Now add the autistic research brain, a history of being misunderstood, grief for her own adolescent self, poor emotional regulation, a fierce, all consuming, unfathomably deep love for her child, and a primal fear her deficits make her an inadequate mum unable to protect her child. Then for fun add a culture that casts middle aged women as ridiculous and self declared identities as sacred. Oh, and menopause!
