When one day the social pandemic of transgenderism has subsided, we will look back in wonder at the extraordinary bravery of early gender critical individuals who dared to speak out.

Detransitioners and desisters like Maia exist in a place beyond praise for what they have had to endure to tell their own stories and to speak the truth. Maia does so with a special eloquence and intellectual rigor. I regret deeply the abuse she has suffered, and applaud her courage. Never stop speaking up.

I see a lot of strong reaction by 'transgender rights activists' against the suggestion that they are mentally ill, but that stigmatises people who are mentally ill. If they're so inclusive and against all forms of discrimination, why can't they admit that mental illness is common, and nothing to be ashamed of? Enough with the bigotry already.

Very insightful about 'trans genocide' claims by trans activists, which I agree is a projected recognition that their identity is dependent on others affirming their ideological belief system.

Part of me wonders that for some of these activists, the real Self distinct from identity labels and expression may actually want us to finally strike down this belief system, with the recognition they are trapped in it. Perhaps the want us to slay the dragon, symbolically speaking. I am not talking about trans people here obviously but in a symbolic realm of the ideological beliefs vs the sword of reality.

I recently watched eight hours of testimony on a Wisconsin bill that would follow 26 states and 36 countries in banning “gender affirming care” in the form of puberty blockers, cross sex hormones, and invasive and harmful surgeries. I observed doctors with extensive experience and knowledge explain succinctly and precisely how harmful these interventions cause. Those opposing the bill that would ban the drugs and surgeries on minors were mostly unhinged, hypocritical, appealing to emotion, and even predicting the future. They all happened to have one or more children identifying as trans or nonbinary (surprise!) and to my dismay, some of them were teachers and health care professionals. However, the evidence presented both articulately and eloquently undeniably indicates the serious harms of these so-called treatments. They stated now-debunked myths that puberty blockers are reversible, simply a pause button on a child developing not only physically but mentally, as puberty blockers literally halt the growth of natural human processes. They regurgitated the idea that these are life-saving measures, despite overwhelming comprehensive 30-year studies indicating that there is no link between gender affirming “care” and the treatment of suicidal ideation.

The people that chose to attend this over eight-hour session included those on both sides of the aisle, but only one side was hollering, screaming out insults, and incognizant of prior testimony. They would say “trans people exist and always have. Get used to it.” No one at this meeting, which was six hours in, denied this fact. They would assert that they had to attend several months of therapy prior to receiving their drugs and surgeries. I know these have not been required; in fact, trans-related therapy was considered conversion therapy last I checked. One planned parenthood phone call has been what is required for this mess.

I cannot imagine how confusing this must be for young people like you. But you’re doing the right thing by speaking the truth, in spite of the death threats, bullying and doxxing tactics used by one particular group of people. Thank you for sharing. I hope you continue rising above those with a clear partisan agenda that leads them to hate those they pretend to protect.

Saying "people who've legally changed their names" to a "cross-sex name" are "all mentally ill", or that "changing their sex on all their documents" makes them "all mentally ill", is something that makes it sound like you're saying trans people in general are all mentally ill - because these are things you might find any or all trans people doing. Trans people generally often do go by a different name and can have it changed legally. There are legal mechanisms for us to change sex on our documents. Doing these things isn't a sign of mental illness, or a sign that trans people broadly are mentally ill, but the way you were saying it made it sound like you thought we were.

Why? Because she didn't directly say that, I didn't include a direct quote of her saying that in quotes. The article also includes a complete transcript of her remarks. You can search the page for the term "mentally ill" to find instances of her saying it in context, and then judge for yourself which groups of people she was labeling as "all mentally ill".

Your comprehensive description of “trans activist” has included my family member, who has a child that is trans-identifying.

I have held back from including her in that group, but, as you so clearly define it, I can no longer do that. That is something I have feared acknowledging.

I would not call her mentally ill, but believe she’s definitely been indoctrinated, and is directly participating in the cult in order to protect herself from having to contemplate what she’s gone along with as it relates to her child, after listening to doctors and therapists that confidently assured her they were the experts. I know that those first months must have been hell for her, and incredibly overwhelming, terrifying, and confusing. Believing the “experts” was simple, whereas going against them would have been like declaring war.

A part of me understands the mental gymnastics she chose to practice in order to be able to breathe and get on with a more typical life of work, travel, and family gatherings, as quickly as possible.

Other parts of me wholeheartedly reject her choice - as I did then. However, my perspective and understanding of this phenomenon (much more expansive now than at that time, 11 years ago now), is not allowed to be expressed in her presence, as it would be deemed “violence.” As we know, this is one of the qualifications you include in your definition of “activist.” I know, certainly, I’d be enacting violence on her “illusion.”

Thank you for presenting this specific topic. Of course, your position, and distinction, is clear.

It is so tragic…

Their techniques are pretty similar to creationists. Firehose of bullshit, selective quotation, misquoting are shared techniques. What is awful is that these activists are also flirting with, or simply encouraging harassment and violence with doxxing.

Hi Maia

First-off I should note that I appreciate your writings and am entirely in sympathy with your position. So this is a wholly friendly inquiry (not what you’re used to from the sounds of it, alas). I should also note that I’m from the UK where the cultural context for these discussions is a little different.

You write (in relation to “trans activists” that they endorse (amongst other things) the following:

“The promotion of the idea that gender is a social construct and exists independently of biological sex – Trans activists push the belief that gender is entirely socially constructed or self-defined, which undermines biological reality.”

I’m confused about what exactly you mean by “gender” in this statement. I’ve written a lot about this (I’m an academic philosopher) and it is clear from legal, medical and general cultural usages that “gender” is sometimes a synonym for “sex” and sometimes means something else entirely. In “traditional” feminist thought, for example, the contrast between biological sex and something like “role” or self-understanding is used as tool for challenging “essentialist” ideas of what woman “are” and “are not”. In that sense, then, “gender” terms are both parasitic on biological terms and necessarily socially constructed. The problem arises when these two uses are conflated. Then someone will say that “woman” is a gender term (recently, a “gender identity” term) and as such is a substitute for biological sex.

So, when you imply that gender is not a social construct are you using “gender” to mean the same as “sex”? If not then what is this thing that is not independent of biological sex but still not the same? If it is intended to be the same then surely the best way to avoid the slippage between gender-meaning-sex and gender-meaning-role (or whatever) is simply to reject gender talk altogether. One can still criticise sex-based stereotyping but not talk of it in terms of gender or of gender roles. I guess the simple test is: if you replace “gender” with “sex” is there anything lost, given that the obvious gain is to reinforce the binary nature of sex and avoid the slippage?

Just a thought!

I use the phrase “sex and gender” to clarify that we aren’t just talking about bad ideas surrounding sexual activity (for example). I use this phrase also because trans activists make claims about gender (roles) being separate from sex
